Parametric Study of the Rectangular Microstrip Antenna with an Air Gap

Abstract
This paper presents parametric study of the rectangular microstrip antenna with an air gap.The air gap is inserted between the dielectric substrate and the ground plane for obtaining a largerbandwidth than a conventional antenna. The closed form expressions are proposed to calculate theresonant frequency, input impedance, and bandwidth of the antenna. The calculated results basedon the closed forms are compared with experimental results and very good agreements are achieved.From experiments, it is found that the resonant frequency and the bandwidth increase while the airgap thickness is increased. In addition, the bandwidth increases while the ratio between the totalthickness and the free space wavelength is increased.
