Abstract

This One Group Pretest Posttest Design aimed to compare the mean scores of perceived social support and health promotion behaviors before and after receiving the intervention. The intervention was a training program for the elderly leaders to provide social support for the elderly in the community in order to promote their health within 3 months. The required sample size was 177. The study tool was a questionnaire composed of 3 parts: 1) general information; 2) perceived social support; and 3) health promotion behaviors.Data were collected by trained interviewees and analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. This study found that after the elderly in the community received a social support program the mean score of perceived social support and the mean score of health promotion behaviors increased with statistical significance. Based on these findings, a social support program by the elderly leaders on health promotion was effective in changing health promotion behaviors among the elderly in the community. This social support program is suggested to implement in a similar community context.
