Abstract

This objective of this research was compare the effect of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) parameters (a type of electrode, welding current and welding speed) on hardness and metallurgical properties of the weld metal on railway steel BS100 Grade 900A. Analyzed result using regression analysis found that all welding variables affected the weld metal hardness. The specimen obtained from electrode “B”, with the welding current of 140 amperes and the welding speed of 35 centimeters per minute (B-140-35) provided the highest hardness (369.1 HBS) containing bainite structure due to the lowest heat input. On the other hand the specimen obtained from electrode “A”, with the welding current of 180 amperes and the welding speed of 30 centimeters per minute (A-180-30) showed the minimum hardness (317.9 HBS) because of pearlite and ferrite resulted from the highest heat input. This specimen “A-180-30” provided the hardness and microstructure that was closest to the original rail steel (281.8 HBS).
