Abstract

The objective of this study is to modify silica surface by radiation-induced admicellar polymerization. The experiment was carried out in the aqueous solution of cetyl trimetylammonium bromide (CTAB).Isoprene monomer was used for forming polyisoprene film inside the template of CTAB adsorbed on silicasurface. The amount of polyisoprene film formed on silica was analyzed by measuring the weight lossduring thermal degradation. The modified silica was also characterized by Fourier Transform InfraredSpectroscopy (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). From the results, gamma radiation wasproved to be a more effective technique to induce admicellar polymerization, compared with thermalprocess, since this convenient technique requires no initiators, takes shorter time, yields more film formation.
