Abstract

Electrical Discharge Machine (EDM) is utilized for drilling electrical conductive materials.Recently, insulating ceramics materials can be machined successfully with the assisting electrodemethod (AEM). Some ceramics recognized as hard materials, especially the high purity alumina(99.99%) are difficult to machine with this method because the conductive layer easily peels offduring the process. Moreover, fracture toughness of the alumina single crystal or sapphire affectmachining properties. Investigation of machining properties comparing with crystallographic planes, C(0001), A(1120) and R(1102) were carried out. The fracture toughness of each plane was found toaffect the conductive layer fabrication and cracks around the EDM holes corresponding to the EDMproperties.
