Abstract

Since the breaking system is essential for vehicle safety, considerable research and development toincrease brake performance were undertaken along with the vehicle development for safety driving. This workaimed to study the temperature distribution of disc brake in a single stop condition which is an extreme servicecondition that causes disc brake failure. Finite element method is employed to study the temperature distributionas a consequence of thermal energy initiated by friction between disc brake and brake pad. Thermal conductionto the inner side of the break and thermal conduction by surrounding air assist the decreasing of highesttemperature. Accordingly, the performance of brake disk is increased. Automotive parts manufacturer can usethe information obtained from the investigation as a guideline to improve disk brake design for a better brakingperformance.
