A Study of the Lecturer’s Characteristics Perceived as Desirable by King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi Students and Lecturers

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study desirable characteristics of lecturers and lecturers’ characteristics which create desirable graduates perceived by KMUTT’ students and lecturers. The results of this study will provide a guideline for developing the lectures of KMUTT to accord with the students’ expectation in order to increase the effectiveness of the students’ learning process.

The subjects in this research were chosen by simple random sampling techniques. They were divided into two groups: 1,455 undergraduate students from 5 faculties and 140 teachers. The data was obtained from a set of questionnaires with reliability of 0.822. The data was analysed by using the following statistical tests: percentage, mean, standard deviation and t—test.

The results of the study showed that :

1. The students’ opinions towards KMUTT lecturers were that there are two important groups, one was self—centered, and the other had warm personalities and was man approachable.

2. KMUTT students and lecturers had different opinions significantly towards desirable characteristics of lecturers (p<0.05). The lecturers’ focuses are on teaching and academical field of study which differ from those of the students on morality, society and lecturers’ behaviors.

3. KMUTT students and lecturers showed statistically significant difference in opinions towards lecturers’ characteristics in order to create desirable graduates (p<o.o5). The lecturers’ opinion is that the desirable lecturers’ characteristics capable of creating qualify graduates is that of lecturers’ academical background knowledge. This differs from that of the students where the focuses are the lecturers’ ability to create students’ confidence and self—esteem.
