Abstract

Natural rubber vulcanizes using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a curing agent is an easy way to process at low temperature without any specific activator and accelerator. GA initiates crosslinking reaction by several possible mechanisms such as crosslinks NR molecules by pentane-1,5-diylidenediamine, crosslinks between protein present in NR latex, crosslinks between PVA-PVA molecules or crosslinks of GA-vinyl groups via aldol condensation. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of GA as a curing reagent by describing the reaction of GA crosslinks in natural rubber and the properties of NR vulcanizates using GA as a curing agent, particularly to improve the properties of NR for promoting rubber products in the industries.
