Abstract

This research is to investigate the extraction of essential oil from sweet basil's leaf to conceal the unpleasant odor form durian, and the production of cube form of essential oil deodorant. The extraction method used in this study was steam distillation with Clevenger apparatus by observing the effect of extraction time onto the amount of essential oil. The result showed that, when increasing the extraction time from 1 to 6 hours, the amount of essential oil increased from 23% to 55% by volume. By optimizing the energy and time consumption, 3 hours for extraction is adequate to obtain the appropriate amount of the essential oil, therefore we chose this condition to mix with paraffin and sculpt into the deodorant cube. As critically comparing the deodorization of durian's odor between the prepared deodorant cube and fresh sweet basil's leaf by testing with 100 people as the population sample (for Taro Yamane formula at the confidence level of  95% and precision rate of 10%), it was found that the prepared deodorant product showed better efficiency to suppress durian's odor than the fresh leaf, Also 84% of population sample provided a good feedback that deodorant cube can perfectly deodorize the odor.
