Abstract

The aim of this research was to develop hydrogel composites from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS). The optimal ratio of PVA/CS was found at 2.5:2.5 by weight which had the highest percentage of swelling index. The optimal ratio was then used for the fabrication of hydrogel with green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using extracted spent coffee grounds (Ex-SCG). The results showed that AgNPs increased with a concentration of silver nitrate (AgNO3) from 20 to 100 mM. The hydrogel nanocomposite containing 50 mM of AgNO3 (H-AgNPs-50) showed the highest percentage of swelling index of 237.7 and compressive stress of 10.07 ± 4 MPa. In addition, the presence of AgNPs in hydrogels containing antibiotic i.e. ceftriaxone sodium could enhance antibacterial activity. The H-AgNPs-50 showed an increase in the inhibition zone of E. coli and S. aureus, by 6.05% and 19.12%, respectively when compared to H-AgNPs-0. Based on the results, H-AgNPs-50 could have a potential to be a wound dressing and drug carrier.
