The Development of an Optimism Promotion Program for Secondary-school Students through the Online Platforms: Design-Based Research

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to design and develop an optimism promotion program and to study the results from applying the program. The participants are 37 students of lower secondary level from Satriwittaya School in the second semester of the academic year 2023. The selection of the participants was through purposive sampling. The research instrument was optimism questionnaires. The statistics implemented was standard deviation (SD) and percentage. From the one-group pretest posttest design, the result showed that 1) the students lacked optimism promotion. This led to the program designing process which consisted of (1.1) a reflection-enhancing activity, (1.2) an experience-enhancing activity and (1.3) creativity-enhancing activity with the duration of 10 hours in total. 2) After the optimism promotion program had been applied, the students showed an increasing level of optimism, more so than before applying the program. The activities are ranked as follows: (2.1) 59.46% of the students had their optimism level of thinking related to their optimism level of reasoning which means the positive students tended to share their positive viewpoints. (2.2) 91.89% of the students were able to analyze the impact of their viewpoints. (2.3) 83.78% of the students were able to improve their way of thinking to be more creative.
