Abstract

This research describes the study of the performance of an axial flow pump (AFP) to compare the cases of with and without screw axle installed in the suction pipe. The experimental system consists of an AFP in which diameter and length of the suction pipe are of 0.12 and 3.60 meter, respectively, driven using Honda GX160 5.5 HP benzene engine, a 3 blades type with blade angle of 35 degree, a steel screw axle with the angle of 30 degree and length of 1.00 meter installed at the middle inside the suction pipe. The experimental results of the AFP with the experimental condition of head at 1 and 2 meter for the tested rotational speed in the range of 1,500 – 4,000 rpm with the increment of 500 rpm step show that the higher rotational speed, the higher fluid power and fuel consumption. The AFP with screw axle installed has higher fluid power of 78.5%, higher fuel consumption of 14.7% and higher efficiency of 54.5%. The AFP without screw axle installed has the maximum efficiency is of 8.4% at the rotational speed of 3,000 rpm and head of 2 meter, while the APF with screw axle installed has the maximum efficiency of 12.9% at the same experimental condition.
