Abstract

This research has an objective to study of resistance behavior on contact force in cutting tools grinding using universal testing machine (dry grinding). Carbide end mill (GC1620), high speed steel end mill (HSS Co8) and high speed steel drill (HSS) were selected as the cutting tools in this study. All of the cutting tools had 6 millimeters diameter, 25 millimeters long and were placed perpendicular to the grinding wheel surface at the grinding feed rate of 1-5 mm/min. The results showed that the contact force, frictional torque and grinding temperature of three cutting tools increased as the grinding feed rate increased whereas the grinding time and speed decreased. The maximum contact force and frictional torque is 103.39 N and 48.21 Nm at the grinding feed rate of 3 and 5 mm/min respectively.
