Abstract
The objective of this research was to study the properties of lightweight masonry containing diatomite. The properties studied were the mechanical properties and drying shrinkage. The main parameter was the percentage replacements of diatomite by weight of limestone powder or sand (0, 5, 8, and 10%). From the test results, when the percentage replacements of diatomite in limestone powder or sand increased, the compressive strength, tensile strength, and bonding strength decreased; however, the compressive strength development of lightweight masonry containing limestone powder was higher than that containing sand. Moreover, when percentage replacement of diatomite increased, the drying shrinkage increased, whereas the setting time decreased.
