Abstract
This paper presents a model for assessing laboratory compaction curves of both coarse and fine grained soils. For a given compacted soil, at dry side of optimum, the m/S0.5 is constant for a particular compaction energy (where m is moisture content and S is degree of saturation), even with the change in moisture content and dry unit weight. The parameter, (m/S0.5)/(m/S0.5)st, is introduced to take the effect of soil type into account. At the optimum moisture content and on the wet side of optimum, the compaction points of all compaction energies practically lie on the same line. These aspects lead to the simple method to assess the compaction curve wherein the compaction energy varies over a wide range by using a single laboratory trial.
