THE DEVELOPMENT OF PLASTIC SHEET THERMOFORMING MOLD MAKING BY USING REVERSE ENGINEERING AND STUDY OF PART WARPAGE WITH FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

Abstract

Thermoforming process is always used for plastic part production with largely shape and low cost requirement. Typical parts from this process are car mat and support sheet at trunk. The advantage of this process is lower cost especially machine and mold than other process such as plastic injection process. Aims of this research is development of thermoforming mold design and making process by using reverse engineering and study of part warpage problem by using finite element method. Mold material for this research is casting aluminum. Plastic sheet material for the experiment is polyethylene. ABAQUS computer program is also applied for plastic part warpage problem analysis. From the results, reverse engineering technique could reduce time for car mat mold design process approximately 40 %. Finally plastic parts from the experiment have shape and dimension very closely when compare with original part.
