Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an activated carbon-coated paper, fabricated from a 75:25 (w/w) blend of rice straw and recycled paper, in extending the shelf life of Gros Michel bananas (Musa acuminata). The coating solution was prepared using modified cassava starch blended with 30% activated carbon powder. To assess its potential for maintaining postharvest quality, the properties of the developed paper were analyzed and compared with those of commercial ethylene absorbers. Bananas were stored in corrugated boxes at 25 °C and monitored on days 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 to evaluate weight loss, colorimetric changes, firmness, and total soluble solids (TSS). The results indicated that the control group had a shelf life of only 3 days. In contrast, bananas packaged with the activated carbon-coated paper maintained their quality for 6 days, a performance comparable to that of commercial ethylene absorbers. These findings demonstrate that the developed paper serves as a promising and sustainable alternative for active packaging applications.
