Abstract

The Kok River Basin, located in Northern Thailand, is a critical watershed that supports agriculture and local ecosystems. This study aims to analyze the impact of drought on the Kok River Basin from 2014 to 2017, utilizing the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) to assess drought conditions across different periods. The research uses 31 years of rainfall data from 19 stations to compute SPI3 and SPI6 indices, reflecting drought severity during the early rainy season and throughout the entire rainy season, respectively. Results indicate that severe droughts, particularly in 2015, significantly affected regions like Wiang Pa Pao and Mueang Chiang Rai, correlating with strong El Niño events. This study emphasizes the importance of incorporating effective drought management strategies, such as the 2P2R framework (Prevention, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery), to enhance adaptive capacity and mitigate future drought impacts. The findings aim to inform policymakers and stakeholders about the necessity of sustainable water management practices and the integration of climate data into local and regional planning to improve resilience against climatic extremes.
