Abstract

Thailand is undergoing a rapid demographic shift toward an aging society, while traditional attitudes continue to view older adults as individuals who should lead a quiet life and avoid physically demanding activities. These factors affect the acceptance of sports among the elderly and highlight limitations in knowledge and the development of suitable activities. This academic article aims to: 1) analyze the meaning and significance of sports for the elderly, 2) examine the role of sports in promoting the well-being of older adults, and 3) propose guidelines for sports scientists to develop sports activities and competitions appropriate to the limitations and cultural contexts of Thailand. The findings emphasize the role of sports in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, slowing the deterioration of bodily systems, enhancing mental health, and fostering social connections. Furthermore, the article offers guidelines for designing appropriate sports activities and provides policy recommendations focused on the sustainable development of sports for the elderly.
