Efficacy of Crude Extract from Goatweed (Ageratum conyzoides L.) Leaves in Controlling the Cowpea Aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch.) under Laboratory Conditions
Main Article Content
Abstract
The efficacy of crude ethanol extract from Ageratum conyzoides L. leaves against the cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) was studied at concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8% (w/v). The experimental design was a completely randomized design (CRD). The results showed that the insecticidal, repellent, and anti-feedant effects of the A. conyzoides leaf extract on cowpea aphids were significantly different at the 95% reliability level when compared to the control. At 8% concentration, the mortality percentage was highest at 100%, and the LC50 values were 1.92 and 1.48% (w/v) at 24 and 48 hours, respectively. Regarding repellent efficacy, the highest repellent percentages against cowpea aphids were 72 and 100% at 12 and 24 hours, respectively. For anti-feedant efficacy, it was found that the number of probes on yardlong bean leaves increased as the extract concentration increased. At 8% concentration, the number of probes on yardlong bean leaves was highest at 9.40 ± 0.48 times/minute, while the control was 1.20 ± 0.48 times/minute. The penetration time for feeding decreased as the extract concentration increased. At 8% concentration, the penetration time of cowpea aphids was lowest at 0.24 ± 0.28 minutes, whereas the control was 7.62 ± 0.68 minutes.
