Abstract

The objective of the study is to investigate ammonium sulfate nutrient ((NH4)2SO4) in bacteria CM2 (SOB) for the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution as working media. An alkalinity level of 12,000 mg l-1 as calcium carbonate is controlled to compare the removal efficiency of H2S at loading rate between 650–700 g-H2S dm-3h-1. The reactor is setup to have a two-stage chemical and biological process with liquid mass flow rate at 0.8 dm3min-1. The result indicates that addition of ammonium sulfate 0, 500 and 2,000 mg l-1 the removal efficiency H2S is 97.0 ± 1.6, 97.2 ± 2.3 and 95.6 ± 2.9 %. It shows that ammonium sulfate does not improve removal efficiency of H2S due to the decrease in pH value of NaOH, which is an important factor for absorbing H2S in the chemical reactor.
