Conservation of Local Wisdom on Bees Hunting for Sustainable Utilization: Case Study at Pra Buddha Cave Community a Boundary between Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.

This research focused on local wisdom of the giant honeybee, Apis dorsata F. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) hunting and a guidelines for conservation of honeybee hunters at Pra-Buddha Cave Community, a boundary between Trang and Nakhon Sri Thammarat provinces. The purposes of this study were 1) to study the local wisdom of the giant honeybee hunting for sustainable utilization and 2) to asses an economic value of the giant honeybee. The research was done by using questionnaire, interviews, focus group discussion, and participating observation from honeybee hunters. The results of the research found that the giant honeybee hunting in Pra-Buddha Cave community has been practiced and plays a vital role in community. Furthermore, the honeybee hunters who had knowledge and experience need to be teamwork started from observation of reason, tracking, equipment preparation, method of the giant honeybee hunting, belonging to the giant honeybee and hunter’s beliefs. In addition, the economic value of the giant honeybee in Pra-Buddha Cave community was calculated using market price and the result of evaluation the giant honeybee showed 71,917 baht per year. The intellectual of the giant honeybee hunting is one of activities that from part of the ancient culture. It is reflected by the nature of observation, test, application, recollection, and instruction in the living. Particularly, in the local knowledge can be used to create g uidelines for conservation and sustainable utilization of the giant honeybee in the future.
