Abstract

     The purpose of this research was threefold: to study the level of opinions regarding factors that are inductive to success in thesis writing of graduate students at Thaksin University and compare them; to analyze the order of factors; and to study the current problem areas.  The study also compiled suggestions regarding factors that are inducive to success in Thaksin University graduate studentsû thesis writing.
        The research sample group was 225 graduate students who were enrolled in the Thesis Writing Program (Plan A program) and graduated between the first semester of 1997 and the summer semester of 2000. The data collection instruments were a questionnaire and an interview questionnaire.  The statistics utilized in the analysis of the data were mean, standard deviation, alpha co-efficiency, t-test and F-test.
         The results revealed that
         1.The overall level of the graduate studentsû opinion regarding factors that are inducive to success in thesis writing was high. The order of factors that are inducive to success ranging from the highest to the lowest was as follows: characteristics of research advisors, characteristics of graduate students, academic experience of graduate students, and academic service of the university.
         2. Overall, the graduate students who differed in student status, marital status, curriculum, area of study, job situation while writing the thesis, and research methodology, did not state different opinions regarding factors that are inducive to success in thesis writing. However, they showed different opinions regarding the time spent on writing the thesis, from enrollment time until graduation.
          Suggestions regarding the success of thesis writing were as follows.  Students should select thesis topics according to their interests and their capability to finish them.  They should write every section of their theses by themselves and should form a help-group to assist each other.  The university should make available up-to-date and adequate number of books, textbooks, and documents.  Information searching service should be quick and up to date and adequate.  Thesis advisors should devote their time to read studentsû theses and give suggestions.  Finally, thesis advisors should have research experience and hold academic titles
