Abstract

The objective of the study of the socialland cultural change of the community of Chinese people on the Hat Yai City tiom the past until now was to study the condition of the change and its process in society and culture of the group of Chinese people in the Hat Yai 
        

Thc result was that many Chinese people, settling down in Hat Yai, came from the ancestor who were labours consuucting train rails in the southem area of Thailand during the time of King R:una s. After constructing the rails many of them settled down in Hat Yai area, resulted that Hat Yai became one of the most important Chinese city communities in Thailand. There overseas Chinese people playecl a very important role in forcing the growth to Hat Yai ftom rhat day on. Since then they have hoped ro find out the cconomic oppofiunities and have been faced with many "condirions" which have been like the important test to be settled down in this country. The tests from the state and society have been especially significant as the state and society themselves look at the anival of Chinese people and their role with worriment. Sometimes the policy or laws of the state act have been the barrier to ways of and the jobs of City Chinese people in Hat Yai as well. Although the policy or the laws of the state and some social conditions have probably affected or threatened their ways of have lives, their ideas, their believes, their traditional cultures, and the jobs; they have proved themselves that they have had high potentials to "build" or to "be one pafi" ofthe change process or the harmonious process in society and culture to be one part of the government and thai society. Even the processes or the political economic, and social context and the time condition may decrease or dilute "the chinese type", the next generation of chinese people in Hat Yai at the present time still succeed the Chinese social and cultural heritage. The "being Chinese" exists even though it gradually fades away and change to the,,being thai".
