Feasibility Study of Biodiesel Productionfrom Waste Coffee Grounds Oil
Main Article Content
Abstract
Biodiesel is the potential fuel to substitute for fossil fuel, which is easy to produce and freindly for environment. Common feedstock (i.e. palm oil) used in the biodiesel production can also be consumed as a human food. When the largescale of biodiesel is produced, it may result in a shortage of edible oil and also increase the production cost. Therefore, a new resource for the biodiesel production is an attractive choice. The aim of this paper is to study the feasibility of using the extracted oil from waste coffee grounds (WCG) as the new feedstock for the biodiesel production. The preliminary results showed that the amount of extracted oil from WCG was 12.2%wt in the presence of free fatty acid (FFA) 16.5%wt. Moreover, 85% of FFA was reduced by esterification reaction and 9 0 . 2 0 % of methyl ester was produced by transesterification reaction. Therefore, WCG was potential feedstock for the biodiesel production.
