Abstract

In this research, we propose a respiratory rate monitoring method using a force sensitive resistor (FSR) to measure the force from chest or abdominal movement. Two digital signal processing techniques including the signal smoothing and the mean adjustment are applied to reduce unwanted additional signals, i.e., noise and artifacts. The applications of these techniques result in less complexity in signal peak detection. The tests on a human-model robot with 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 breaths-per-minute settings demonstrate a very good performance of the proposed method. The plotted results show that the proposed method yields the rates very close to the actual respiratory rates at any given time instances. In addition, considering the average values over 11 tests using 11 actual respiratory rates, it yields the average of the mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.22 and the average of the root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.32.
