Abstract

In developing ceramics from agricultural waste materials for the production of packaging for organic agricultural processed products, the objectives are : 1. To develop ceramics from agricultural waste materials for the production of packaging for organic agricultural processed products. 2. To test the physical properties of organic agricultural processed product packaging and 3. To transfer knowledge and production to communities, organizations and relevant agencies for use in creating organic agricultural product packaging in the community.

The research plan can be divided into 4 steps as follows: Step 1: Testing the physical properties of Ban Chang Pi clay, Sikhio District, Surin Province. Step 2 Testing the physical properties of the glaze. Step 3 Testing the clay texture by molding the product by casting the clay in a plaster mold, by free-form molding, and by the turntable method. and step 4: transferring knowledge and production to communities, organizations and relevant agencies for use in creating packaging for organic agricultural products in the community.

The research results found that :

  1. From the physical properties test of Ban Chang Pi clay, Sikhio District, Surin Province, it was found that the physical properties after firing, the highest and lowest shrinkage were at a mixing ratio of 10 and 16, with shrinkage of 9.86 and 9.44 percent, respectively. The highest and lowest strengths of the soil were obtained at the mixing ratios of 5 and 16 with the strengths of 125.37 and 101.16 Kg/cm2, respectively. The highest and lowest water absorptions were obtained at the mixing ratios of 2 and 12 with the water absorptions of 0.159 and 0.099 percent, respectively. The colors of the soil were brown and dark brown.

  2. From the physical properties test of the coating, it was found that in selecting the coating water to be used to coat the ceramic packaging surface, the specific selection was made in 1 mixing ratio as follows: Ban Chang Pi soil, horse tooth stone and Hanuman tooth stone in the ratio of 20:30:40 respectively, adding CaCO3 and ZnO in the amount of 6 and 5% respectively to be used in coating ceramic packaging.

  3. From the selection of clay to be used in the forming of ceramic products, the selection results that passed the criteria were 16 mixing ratios and 1 mixing ratio was specifically selected, namely: Ban Chang Pi soil, Lampang white soil + rice husk ash, horse tooth stone and Hanuman tooth stone in the ratio of 20:40:30:10 respectively to be used for forming organic agricultural processed product packaging.

  4. From the knowledge transfer and production to the community, it was found that :

4.1 Knowledge transfer process found that the design of the shape combined the shape of the ancient clay pot excavated in the area of Prasat Chang Pi, combined with geometric shapes that emphasized utility as the main principle. The product has a cylindrical shape with a lid and an elephant-shaped handle, and a small jar with four legs and an elephant-shaped lid and handle.

4.2 The results for the community found that they had herbal packaging that was unique to Ban Chang Pi. The community had more jobs and income from transforming local raw materials into products with higher value. To create pride in local culture and wisdom, to enhance skills and self-reliance, and to promote intergenerational learning so that new generations in the community have the opportunity to learn and pass on local wisdom.

4.3 Comparison with the set goals found that the workshop on transferring knowledge of pottery to the community was able to achieve most of the goals as set.

4.4 Suggestions for development It was found that problems in product design and price were found that most of the products produced by villagers were in the original form and could not be adapted to new designs or techniques, resulting in high production costs which would then affect the selling price of the products.
