Development of Mobile Handwashing Unit for Individuals with Mobility Limitations

Abstract

This study focuses on the development of a mobile handwashing unit for individuals with mobility impairments. Based on feedback from mobility-limited individuals living in rural areas without full-time caregivers, a need was identified for assistive tools that enhance the ability to independently maintain personal hygiene, specifically for hand and face cleaning, while ensuring convenience and minimizing unnecessary movement. The mobile handwashing prototype was therefore developed using principles of universal design, ergonomics, convenience, and functional efficiency. The developed unit integrates its own water supply and drainage systems, eliminating the need for permanent plumbing installation and thereby providing high flexibility. The sink height was designed to accommodate wheelchair users or those in seated position at a height of 45–50 cm, and 65–70 cm for bedside use. The real-world usability testing results indicate that the prototype reduces user movement, enhances safety, and decreases dependence on caregivers, thereby improving the efficiency of daily hygiene practices. The assessed questionnaire-based data indicates a high level of user satisfaction. The mobile handwashing unit can be applied in households, healthcare and elderly care facilities. It also provides a guideline for the development of assistive devices aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with mobility limitations.
