Residential Environment Factors Associated with Accidents Among Older Adults: A Case Study of Tha Pho Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phitsanulok Province
Keywords:
residential environment, older adults, accidentsAbstract
This study aimed to investigate the environmental residential factors associated with accidents among community-dwelling older adults in Phitsanulok Province. A total of 261 older adults were selected using a multi-stage sampling method and categorized into two groups: those with a history of residential accidents (n = 132) and those without a history of residential accidents (n = 129). Data were collected using structured interview questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, were used to describe the sample characteristics. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the associations, presenting adjusted odds ratios (ORadj) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Environmental factors significantly associated with residential accidents among older adults in the past 12 months included stagnant or wastewater around the residence and slippery stair surfaces (p < 0.05). Specifically, older adults who experienced accidents had a significantly higher risk associated with stagnant or wastewater around the residence (ORadj = 2.13; 95% CI = 1.060 - 4.280) and slippery stair surfaces (ORadj= 2.71; 95% CI = 1.380 – 5.320) compared to those who did not experience residential accidents.
