Abstract

This study aims to compare the forecasting performance of time series and machine learning models for predicting the monthly quantity of potato exports in Thailand. Secondary monthly data from the Office of Agricultural Economics covering the period from 2016 to 2025 (120 monthly observations) were employed. Five forecasting models were evaluated, namely Holt–Winters Multiplicative, Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The dataset was divided into training and testing sets using splits of 90:10, 80:20, and 70:30. Forecasting performance was assessed using Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). The results indicated that ARIMA (0,1,3) achieved the best forecasting performance with a MAPE of 12.25%, whereas XGBoost outperformed all competing models overall with the lowest MAPE of 8.06%. These findings suggest that machine learning models are more effective in capturing complex relationships within the export data than conventional time series models. The proposed comparison provides useful evidence for supporting production planning, export management, and agricultural trade policy in Thailand.
