Synergistic Activity of Mangiferin with Antimicrobial drugs Against Staphylococci
Keywords:
Mangiferin, Antimicrobial drugs, Synergistic activityAbstract
This study aimed to investigate the synergistic activity of mangiferin extracted from Nam Dok Mai mangoes in SamutPrakan Province with five antimicrobial drugs representing different mechanisms of action: oxacillin (cefoxitin) (FOX), linezolid (LZD), clindamycin (DA), trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole (SXT), and tetracycline (TE). The activity of these combinations was evaluated against four Staphylococci strains, including standard strains and clinical isolates, using the agar disk diffusion method. The results demonstrated that mangiferin exhibited a synergistic activity with trimethoprim - sulfamethoxazole (SXT) against a clinical isolate of Staphylococcus epidermidis. The inhibition zone increased by 327.1% compared with trimethoprim - sulfamethoxazole alone. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that trimethoprim - sulfamethoxazole alone showed resistance (R) against S. epidermidis. However, when mangiferin was combined with trimethoprim - sulfamethoxazole, the susceptibility profile improved from resistant (R) to intermediate (I). In contrast, no synergistic activity or only minimal synergistic effects were observed between mangiferin and the other four antimicrobial drugs, namely oxacillin (cefoxitin), linezolid, clindamycin, and tetracycline. The synergistic activity mechanism of mangiferin with trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, which inhibits folic acid synthesis, remains unclear and further investigation. These preliminary findings suggest that mangiferin may have potential as an antimicrobial adjuvant for the future treatment of Gram-positive bacterial infections.
