Development of Programs to Enhance Digital Literacy of Youth in the 21 Century.

Abstract

     The objectives of this research were to: 1) study the types of games preferred by youth in the 21st century; 2) develop online game-based learning media using Construct 3 software to promote digital literacy among youth in the 21st century; and 3) compare digital literacy test scores before and after using the online game-based learning media. The sample consisted of 397 secondary school students under the Secondary Educational Service Area Office Buriram. The research instruments included: 1) a digital literacy assessment for youth in the 21st century; and 2) a program to promote digital literacy among youth in the 21st century. The statistics used for data analysis were mean, standard deviation, Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) index, and dependent samples t-test


     The research findings revealed that: 1) the game category most preferred by the sample group was Adventure Games ( สมการ = 4.96, SD. = 0.52), followed by Action Games (สมการ = 4.82,
SD. = 0.60) and Fighting Games ( สมการ = 4.77, SD. = 0.61), respectively. Educational Games received a low level of interest from youth ( สมการ = 2.31, SD. = 0.62); 2) the evaluation of the program to promote digital literacy among youth in the 21st century by five experts, divided into two aspects consisting of content and media quality, showed that experts’ opinions on content were at the highest level ( สมการ = 4.68), and experts’ opinions on media quality were also at the highest level (สมการ = 4.67); and 3) the comparison of pre-test and post-test scores showed that students’ scores after using the program to promote digital literacy among youth in the 21st century were significantly higher than before using the program at the .05 level.
